⚠ Travel Notes
- ·Tsum Valley requires both the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and a Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit — the restricted permit must be arranged through a registered trekking agency and cannot be obtained independently
- ·The valley only opened to foreign trekkers in 2008 and infrastructure remains minimal — teahouse quality and food variety drop significantly beyond Chumling, and self-sufficiency in gear and medication is essential
- ·Altitude gain is gradual but upper settlements and monastery approaches exceed 3,500–4,000m; acclimatization days should be built into any itinerary, particularly before visiting Mu Gompa
- ·Monsoon (June–August) renders the Budhi Gandaki approach trail prone to landslides and flooding — several sections are genuinely impassable or dangerous during heavy rain periods
- ·Evacuation options are extremely limited; the nearest road access is many days' walk away, and helicopter rescue is weather-dependent and expensive — comprehensive travel insurance with high-altitude helicopter evacuation cover is non-negotiable
- ·Mobile network coverage is absent through most of the valley — satellite communicators are advisable for solo trekkers or small groups without agency support on the ground
