Why visit Begnas Lake

Begnas Lake is a freshwater lake in Pokhara Metropolis of Kaski district of Nepal located in the south-east of the Pokhara Valley. The lake is the third largest lake of Nepal and second largest, after Phewa Lake, among the seven lakes in Pokhara Valley. Water level in the lake fluctuates seasonally due to rain, and utilization for irrigation. The water level is regulated through a dam constructed in 1988 on the western outlet stream, Khudi Khola.

Unobstructed views of Annapurna and Manaslu ranges from the lakeside — less crowded and often clearer than Phewa Lake viewpoints
Rowing on calm, relatively undisturbed water compared to the busier Phewa Lake scene in central Pokhara
Caged fishery operations visible on the lake — an active freshwater aquaculture system worth observing up close
Surrounding wetland and paddy field edges attract waterbirds, making the shoreline walk productive for birdwatching
Begnas Fish Festival, a local annual event celebrating the lake's fishing culture and community economy
The 1988 dam on Khudi Khola at the western outlet — a functional irrigation structure that also offers a vantage point over the lake's lower end
Quiet resort stays along the eastern Pokhara Valley with significantly less tourist traffic than Lakeside Pokhara

⚠ Travel Notes

  • ·Water levels drop noticeably in dry season (winter into spring), which can affect boat access and shoreline aesthetics
  • ·The lake is actively used for irrigation — during peak agricultural periods, water drawdown can be significant
  • ·Road to Begnas from central Pokhara (roughly 15 km east) is manageable but some stretches are narrow; local buses exist but are infrequent
  • ·No high-altitude concerns — lake sits at approximately 650 m — but monsoon-season leeches are common on surrounding trails
  • ·Limited medical facilities in the immediate Begnas area; serious issues require transport back to Pokhara city
