Why visit Tilicho Lake

Tilicho Lake, situated at a breathtaking 4,919 meters above sea level, holds the record as the world's highest lake. The intense blue of its glacial waters against the snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna range creates a scene of raw, otherworldly beauty. Accessible from the Annapurna Circuit, the side trip to Tilicho involves crossing a challenging trail carved into sheer cliffs — making it all the more rewarding.

The lake stretches 4km in length and 1.2km in width — the longest diameter of any lake at this altitude, making it a genuinely large body of water rather than a high-altitude pond
The trail from Tilicho Base Camp lodge to the lake crosses a notorious landslide-prone cliff traverse — a narrow path carved into near-vertical rock faces above a steep drop
Hindu pilgrims identify the lake as Kak Bhusundi Lake from the Ramayana, where the sage Kak Bhusundi recounted the epic to Garuda in the form of a crow — a layer of meaning most trekkers pass without knowing
In 2000, a Russian dive team completed what was then the highest-altitude scuba dives ever recorded in these waters
An alternate Annapurna Circuit crossing via Mesokanto La or Tilicho North Pass skirts the lake's north shore and connects to the Kali Gandaki valley — a more demanding route than Thorong La that requires at least one night of camping with no teahouse support beyond Base Camp
Himalayan snowcock and ibex are regularly sighted in the surrounding alpine zone, particularly on the rocky slopes above the lake's western end
The lake has no documented inflow or outflow channels — water enters and exits through subsurface means, and no aquatic organisms have been recorded in it

⚠ Travel Notes

  • ·The cliff traverse on the approach from Shree Kharka is genuinely dangerous — rockfall and loose trail sections have caused fatalities; do not attempt in poor visibility or after fresh snowfall
  • ·At 4,919m, acute mountain sickness is a real risk; acclimatization days in Manang are not optional — the standard advice of ascending slowly from lower Manang applies strictly here
  • ·The alternate crossing via Mesokanto La or Tilicho North Pass closes under snow more frequently than Thorong La despite being lower — check conditions locally before committing to this route
  • ·No teahouses exist between Tilicho Base Camp lodge and Thini Gaon on the western crossing; groups must carry camping gear and supplies for at least two nights
  • ·A TIMS card and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) are both required; these must be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara before the trek
  • ·Monsoon season (June–August) makes the cliff traverse significantly more hazardous due to wet rock and increased rockfall; most trekkers visit between October–November or March–May
  • ·Kajin Sara Lake (5,020m) has since surpassed Tilicho in altitude — the 'world's highest lake' claim in older guidebooks and signage is now outdated
