Why visit Kagbeni

Kagbeni is a village in the Baragung Muktikshetra rural municipality of Mustang District of the Himalayas, in Nepal, located in the valley of the Kali Gandaki River. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census, it had a population of 555 people. The village lies on the trail from Jomsom to the royal capital Lo Manthang, near the junction with the trail to Muktinath. Kagbeni is also regarded as one of the oldest villages in the Himalayas. Kagbeni lies between two sacred rivers muktinath and kaligandaki.

Kag Chode Thubten Samphel Ling Monastery, a 15th-century Tibetan Buddhist gompa with resident monks, murals, and a commanding position above the village rooftops
The medieval mud-brick architecture of the old village quarter — flat-roofed houses, narrow lanes, and fortified walls that reflect centuries of Tibetan cultural continuity
Confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong Khola rivers, a site considered sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions
Gateway checkpoint for Upper Mustang — the red-walled police post here marks the boundary beyond which the restricted area permit is required for travel toward Lo Manthang
Wind-carved landscape of the Kali Gandaki gorge visible from the village, one of the deepest river gorges on earth, with dramatic erosion columns and exposed sedimentary cliffs
Apple orchards and local chang (barley beer) production — Kagbeni sits at the lower edge of Mustang's apple-growing belt, and small guesthouses serve locally made products
Proximity to Muktinath temple trail, making it a natural overnight stop before or after the pilgrimage site at 3,800m

⚠ Travel Notes

  • ·Altitude sits around 2,800m — acclimatize properly in Jomsom or Pokhara before arriving, especially if continuing toward Muktinath or Upper Mustang
  • ·Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (currently USD 500 for 10 days) is mandatory to travel north of Kagbeni toward Lo Manthang — obtain in Kathmandu or Pokhara through a registered trekking agency
  • ·Strong afternoon winds funnel through the Kali Gandaki gorge daily, typically picking up after midday and making walking or cycling conditions difficult — plan movement for mornings
  • ·Road access from Jomsom has improved but remains rough; during monsoon (June–August) landslides can cut the route and flights to Jomsom are frequently cancelled due to cloud cover
  • ·Facilities are basic — electricity is limited and unreliable, hot water is not guaranteed, and ATMs are not available in Kagbeni itself; carry sufficient cash from Jomsom or Pokhara
  • ·Trekking without a registered guide is technically restricted in the Annapurna Conservation Area and Upper Mustang zone — verify current regulations before departure
