Lukla occupies an unusual place in Nepal's geography—a town defined less by what it is than by where it sits. Perched at 2,860 metres in the Solukhumbu District, it serves as the primary entry point for trekkers heading to the Khumbu region and Mount Everest. This practical role has shaped everything about the settlement. The town's name carries pastoral history—Lukla means "place with many goats and sheep"—though you'll find the landscape and economy have shifted dramatically toward tourism infrastructure. The famous one-runway airstrip, carved into steep terrain, connects this isolated settlement to Kathmandu and defines much of the visitor experience here. What makes Lukla worth understanding is its function as a genuine cultural intersection.
