Why visit Nuptse

Nuptse or Nubtse is a mountain in the Khumbu region of the Mahalangur Himal, a part of the Nepalese Himalayas. It lies 2 km (1.2 mi) to the southwest of Mount Everest. The main peak, Nuptse I with an elevation of 7,861 m (25,791 ft), was first climbed on May 16, 1961 by Dennis Davis and Sherpa Tashi. After a hiatus of almost 20 years, Nuptse became an objective of mountaineers again, with important routes being put up on its west, south, and north faces.

⚠ Travel Notes

  • ·Nuptse sits at 7,861 m and requires serious high-altitude mountaineering experience; acute mountain sickness, HACE, and HAPE are genuine risks at these elevations
  • ·Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and climbing permits from the Nepal Mountaineering Association are mandatory; permit costs are substantial and logistics require advance planning through a registered agency
  • ·The approach through Khumbu involves crossing the Khumbu Icefall for summit attempts — one of the most objectively dangerous sections of terrain in the Himalaya due to serac collapse and crevasse hazard
  • ·Monsoon season (June–August) brings heavy snowfall at altitude, increased avalanche risk on all faces, and trail disruption on lower approach routes from Lukla
  • ·Nuptse's low topographic prominence (319 m) relative to its elevation means it is frequently overlooked in permit planning, but it remains a technically demanding 7,000er with a serious fatality record
  • ·Lukla flights are weather-dependent and cancellations can strand trekkers and climbers for days; build buffer days into any itinerary
