About
Why visit Pumdikot Shiva Statue
Perched at 1,500 meters on a ridge above Pokhara, Pumdikot is home to Nepal's second-tallest Shiva statue — a 51-foot white marble figure standing atop a 57-foot stupa, totaling exactly 108 feet, a number sacred in Hindu cosmology. The statue faces north toward the Annapurna range, and on clear mornings the entire massif from Dhaulagiri to Manaslu stretches across the horizon in unbroken white. At the base of the stupa, 108 Shiva lingas form a complete circle, each one individually carved and maintained by local devotees. Pilgrims walk the circumambulation path barefoot, pausing at each linga, while incense smoke drifts upward past the statue's carved features. The site draws both religious visitors and trekkers who come for the ridge-top views — Fewa Lake glints silver far below, and the white dome of the World Peace Pagoda is visible across the valley on its own forested hill. The surrounding development is still underway. Plans include a model of Mount Sumeru depicting Shiva and Parvati, a Martyr's Memorial Park, and fully accessible pathways throughout the complex. As of now, the grounds have an unfinished quality — construction materials sit alongside completed sections — but this also means crowds remain manageable compared to Pokhara's lakeside attractions. Getting here requires either a 45-minute drive from Pokhara's Lakeside area followed by a short uphill walk, or a longer hike through rhododendron forest from the valley floor. Local jeeps run from Pokhara on weekends. Sunrise visits reward early risers with alpenglow on the Annapurnas before valley haze builds. Mondays and the auspicious day of Shivaratri bring the largest crowds of Hindu worshippers, filling the air with chanting and marigold offerings. For a quieter experience, weekday mornings outside festival periods offer the ridge almost to yourself, with only the wind and distant cowbells for company.
