Why visit Phoksundo Lake

Phoksundo Lake in Dolpa is arguably Nepal's most beautiful lake. Its extraordinary turquoise-blue color (caused by high mineral content) is unlike any other lake in the Himalayas. The lake sits at 3,611 meters in Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal's largest national park. Ancient Bon Buddhist monasteries, snow leopard habitat, and the mystical upper Dolpa region make this one of the world's most extraordinary journeys.

The lake's color — an intense turquoise-blue caused by dissolved minerals and lack of algae — shifts visibly through the day from deep cobalt to pale jade depending on cloud cover and angle of light
Ringmo village on the lake's southern shore is one of the last intact Bon communities in Nepal, with a functioning Bon monastery and residents who still practice pre-Buddhist Tibetan religious traditions
Shey Phoksundo National Park surrounding the lake is among the most viable snow leopard habitats in Nepal — local guides and park staff occasionally track fresh pugmarks on the rocky slopes above the waterline
The Phoksundo Khola gorge on the approach from Juphal cuts through some of the deepest canyon terrain in the Himalayas, with the trail passing Phoksundo waterfall — one of Nepal's tallest single-drop falls — before the lake comes into view
Upper Dolpa beyond the lake, accessible via Shey Gompa and the Kang La pass, is a restricted-area circuit that sees very few trekkers annually and preserves a Tibetan-influenced landscape largely unchanged since the 1970s
The lake has no outlet — water drains underground — which contributes to its unusual chemistry and the eerie stillness of the surface in calm weather
Camping on the lakeshore and walking the partial circumambulation trail offers close views of the sheer cliffs dropping directly into the water on the northern side, where the depth exceeds 145 meters

⚠ Travel Notes

  • ·Dolpa requires a restricted area permit (USD 10/day for Lower Dolpa where Phoksundo sits; USD 500 for the first 10 days for Upper Dolpa) — these must be arranged in Kathmandu through a registered trekking agency, not on arrival
  • ·The standard access route flies Nepalgunj to Juphal (Dolpa airport), one of Nepal's more turbulent short-runway approaches — flights cancel frequently due to weather and are not bookable far in advance with confidence; build 2-3 buffer days at Nepalgunj
  • ·The trek from Juphal to Phoksundo Lake takes 2-3 days and gains significant elevation quickly — acclimatization at Ringmo before attempting higher passes is important, as the nearest medical facility is effectively back in Nepalgunj
  • ·Monsoon (June–August) does not close the route entirely but makes the trail through the Phoksundo gorge genuinely dangerous due to rockfall and flash flooding — the pre-monsoon window (April–May) and post-monsoon (September–November) are the reliable seasons
  • ·Supplies and teahouse options are extremely limited beyond Juphal — this is not a route where you can resupply or expect consistent food variety; most trekkers carry significant provisions or arrange full camping support through their agency
  • ·Satellite communication or a personal locator beacon is strongly advisable — mobile network coverage is absent throughout the route and emergency evacuation by helicopter depends entirely on weather windows
