Why visit Rara Lake

Rara Lake is Nepal's largest lake and one of its most stunning natural wonders. Situated in the remote Karnali Province at an altitude of 2,990 meters, the lake is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and dramatic mountain backdrop. Surrounded by Rara National Park, the region is home to red pandas, Himalayan black bears, and over 200 species of birds. The remoteness of Rara makes it one of Nepal's greatest hidden gems — few tourists make the journey, ensuring a pristine and authentic experience.

Circumnavigate the 13.5km lake perimeter on foot — the full loop takes 4-5 hours and passes through dense conifer forest, open meadows, and several viewpoints where the water shifts between deep blue and green depending on light and cloud cover
Rara National Park's mixed forest supports red pandas, Himalayan black bears, grey wolves, and musk deer — early morning walks along the northern shore offer the best wildlife sighting conditions
Over 200 recorded bird species include the bar-headed goose, brahminy duck, and various migratory waterfowl that use the lake as a stopover — October through November sees peak migratory activity
The ruins of Rara village and Chchapre village, both relocated when the national park was established in 1976, remain visible near the lakeshore — a rarely discussed piece of displacement history tied directly to conservation policy
Murma Top (approximately 3,895m), reachable in a half-day hike from the lake, provides an aerial perspective of the entire lake basin and the surrounding Chuchemara ridge
The lake's water clarity is exceptional — visibility extends several meters down from the surface, and the absence of motorized boats keeps it that way

⚠ Travel Notes

  • ·Access requires either a flight to Talcha Airport (Mugu) — a short airstrip with frequent weather cancellations, sometimes for multiple consecutive days — or a multi-day walk from Jumla; build at least two buffer days into any itinerary
  • ·Rara National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000 for foreigners) and Karnali Province permit are both required; arrange these in Kathmandu or Jumla before arrival as there is no reliable permit office at the lake
  • ·Monsoon season (June–August) makes trails muddy and flights even more unreliable; the Jumla–Rara trail can become hazardous; most trekkers visit October–November or March–May
  • ·Altitude at 2,990m is manageable for most, but the approach from Jumla involves passes above 3,600m — acclimatize in Jumla (2,300m) for at least one night before attempting the trek
  • ·Teahouse infrastructure is minimal; accommodation options around the lake are basic and limited in number, with no guarantee of availability during peak season — carry a sleeping bag regardless of season as temperatures drop sharply at night
  • ·Medical evacuation from Rara is logistically difficult and expensive; the nearest hospital with meaningful capacity is in Nepalgunj, accessible only by air from Talcha
