About
Why visit Langtang Valley
Langtang Valley is often called the "valley of glaciers" and is Nepal's closest major trekking destination to Kathmandu. The valley runs north toward the Tibetan border, flanked by Langtang Lirung (7,227m) and a parade of glaciated peaks. The region is home to the Tamang people, whose culture, monasteries, and cheese factories (a legacy of Swiss development projects) add rich cultural texture to dramatic mountain scenery.

⚠ Travel Notes
- ·Altitude gain is rapid — Syabrubesi sits at roughly 1,460m and Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m, with most trekkers covering this in 3-4 days; acclimatization days at Kyanjin are strongly advised before attempting Tserko Ri
- ·Langtang National Park entry permit (currently NPR 3,000) and TIMS card are both required; check current permit requirements in Kathmandu before departure as regulations have changed post-2015
- ·The 2015 Gorkha earthquake fundamentally altered the valley's topography — unstable slopes above the trail remain a hazard during heavy precipitation, and some sections cross active debris zones
- ·Monsoon season (June–September) makes the lower trail through dense forest extremely slippery and leeches are pervasive below 2,500m; the upper valley remains more accessible but cloud cover eliminates mountain views for days at a time
- ·Road access from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (the trailhead) takes 7-9 hours on a rough mountain road subject to landslide closures during and immediately after monsoon — confirm road status before travel
- ·Teahouse infrastructure, while rebuilt since 2015, is thinner than on the Annapurna or Everest circuits; accommodation options narrow significantly above Langtang village and advance booking is advisable during October peak season
